Jan Nelson

Janet (Jan) Nelson was born in Glasgow in 1956. She is a self taught artist who studied for three years through the Open College of the Arts at Leith School of Art in Edinburgh and has been painting for over 25 years. Working on a part time basis initially, she took up painting full time in 2008 and is now based at her studio in Crail, where work can be combined with her other great love of sailing.

The paintings you will see are as much about the paint as the picture - the paint is laid on thickly so that it catches the light and adds extra depth. This style of painting helps to capture the tremendous movement, thrills and glorious colours of sailing both in a scenic and racing sense. Acrylic is the medium of choice but watercolour and oil are also used depending on the subject matter.

The majority of work on the site relates to the sea, but there are also forays into landscape, nature and abstraction. Jan concentrates her work within a few select galleries around the UK and has a number of paintings in private collections in America, Canada, Dubai, Luxembourg, Geneva, Australia, and Ireland.
