Gordon Wilson

I arrive at the studio around 7.30am each day and my routine is always the same -  the kettle goes on, my Spotify playlist is selected and off I go! I have a number of paintings on the go at one time, my mind is bursting with ideas for new paintings. My studio is always brimming with canvases….. Sitting at my easel, time evaporates, reality and subconscious merge happily.  It’s a lonely but blessed life.   I paint solidly until about 4pm.  Obviously some days are more inspired than others and so if I’m not ‘in the mood’ there is always paperwork to catch up on or finished paintings needing framed!”

Gordon Wilson is recognised as one of Scotland's most exciting and intriguing contemporary artists. . Born in 1968, he grew up in Glasgow where he’s still based today.  He studied at The Glasgow School of Art and then started out as a designer and picture framer before becoming a full time professional artist.

Working from his Glasgow studio, Gordon paints a range of subject matter in his pieces, ranging from quirky portraiture to emotive land and seascapes, with his deep love of the West Coast of Scotland shining throughout.

His colourful kaleidoscopic landscapes, often with wee houses and smoking chimneys (lums) are contrasted with his much loved paintings of wee old ladies (his ‘Biddies’), Belted Galloway Cows (’Belties’) and also boats - characterful Clyde 'puffers.'

Often bringing an instant smile to your face the minute you see them, within each painting is huge amount of work, building layers of colour that keep you noticing something new each time you return to view.

Although Gordon describes his studio as "organised chaos," he has always been a highly disciplined painter:

Demand for Gordon Wilson artwork continues to grow and he has recently been working on some of the largest paintings he’s painted to date – “they need big walls!”
